It is, once again, National LGBT Coming out Day. I enjoy looking back on my previous Coming Out Day posts to see the distance I have traveled. Over the years I have met many other queer people who identify in many ways along the LGBTQIA spectrum. The myriad combinations of biology, sexuality, gender identity , and gender presentation are all a part of life’s rich tapestry.
For some people, biology, sexuality, gender identity, and gender presentation stack into a neat pile with no gaps and no questions. These people are referred to as straight and cisgender. For others, personal identity is that space where biology, sexuality, gender identity, and gender expression intersect in dynamic and unique ways. We are the LGBTQ community.
There are two reasons I celebrate National LGBT Coming out Day each year:
- To remind straight cisgender people that we are here, we are queer, and we’re not going away.
-
To remind those who struggle to present as straight cisgender people, even though they are not, that you are not alone.
Things to remember:
- All the freaky people make the beauty of the world (Michael Franti)
- It ain’t no sin to be glad your alive (Bruce Springsteen)
- Stay awkward brave and kind (Brene Brown)
